Thirty-sixth Legislature. House. No. 24. An Act to provide for the equitable distribution of the estates of insolvent debtors, 1857. The local judge of probate had jurisdiction over the cases. There were hearings to prove insolvency, to line up creditors and claims, and divide the assets. If the debtor had done his best and followed the rules, he could receive a certificate closing the case. Fraud would be punished.
