Andrews, Hawaiian Dictionary, 1865
A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language; To which is appended an English-Hawaiian vocabulary and a chronological table of remarkable events: by Lorrin
Andrews, xvi+17–559 pp., Honolulu, H.I., pr. by Henry M. Whitney, 1865. (Users are alerted that the dictionary has the interesting attribute of
alphabetizing first by vowels and then by consonants. It should be noted also that this dictionary was published long before scholars developed contemporary
Hawaiian print text, which incorporates both diacriticals and glottals. Thus, in common with most of the Hawaiian-language legal texts reproduced in
this collection, it lacks those essential accouterments of contemporary Hawaiian scholarship. For more modern Hawaiian dictionaries and guides to
Hawai’i place names, see the excel-lent free web site: Ulukau: The Hawaiian Electronic Library, at: http://ulukau.org/english.php.)
