Lawrence, The Treaty of Washington, 1871
W. B. Lawrence's notes and comments regarding the history and negotiations leading to the 1872 Treaty of Washington. The Treaty settled various
disputes between the United States and Great Britain, including the Alabama Claims, illegal fishing by American trawler men in Canadian waters and
compensation for British civilian losses in the American Civil War. The author's notes focused primarily on the neutral shipping by Great Britain to the
Confederate ports during the Civil War and subsequent capture by the Union troops. In this document, the author supported his position in favor of the
treaty with historical and other precedent.
