Digest of international law: prep. and under the direction of ed. Marjorie M. Whiteman, Vol. 1-15, Wash., GPO, 1963-1973, all published. Cite as
D.I.L. (White.). (The index volume, Vol. 15, contains a General Index, a List of Cases, and a List of Main Entries. Whiteman notes in the preface to the
General Index: “The structure of the General Index reflects that of the substantive volumes of {the main work} in that the main headings, for the most
part, accord with international law concepts and terms used to designate chapters and sections within the main volume of the Digest. Thus the Index is
primarily legal in approach rather than factual, geographical, or chronological.” Because the set as a whole is very difficult to use, either in
paper or on line, without the General Index, pp. 1-452, List of Cases, pp. 453-488, and List of Main Entries, pp. 489-503; and because the page numbers in
these three tools aren’t useful for browsing entries, LLMC has chosen to “tag” the pages in these three tools under an alphabetical rather than
pagination scheme. Finally, it will be quite useful for the reader to know the general organization of the subject matter among the volumes, which is as
follows: V.1 – Intl’ Law in General, and States, Terrs. & Govs.; V.2 – Recognition, State Succession, and Territory & Sovereignty; V.3 – Boundaries, and
Intl’ Rivers & Canals; V.4 – Territorial Seas, High Seas, and Fisheries; V.5 – Rights & Duties of States; V.6 – National Jurisdiction and
Extradition; V.7 – Conduct Diplomacy & Rights of Diplomats, Intl’ Copyright & Patents & Trademarks; V.8 – Nationality, Passports & Intl’ Travel, and Aliens; V.9
– Maritime and Aviation Law, Intl’ Communications, and Meteorological Matters; V.10 – Armed Conflict on Land & Sea, and Rights of Non-Combatants; V.11
– Prize, Neutrality, Arms Control & Disarmament; V.12 – Legal Regulation of Use of Force, and Intl’ Court of Justice; V.13 – Intl’ Organizations, and
the U.N.; V.14 – Treaties & Other Intl’ Agreements, and Intl’ Economic Law. At the front of each is a detailed Table of Contents, which will also be
very useful to readers. Whiteman rose to be a senior legal adviser at the State Department. She is also the author of Damages in International Law, 3
