( An historical sketch of the office and functions of an Advocate concentrating principally on Greece, Rome, France, and England. The preface describes the author's approach and the major sources he consulted. Chapters provide sketches of the Athenian Courts, the Roman Courts, advocacy in England, and the origin of the theory of gratuitous service by an advocate. The footnotes cite primary and secondary resources and provide additional comments. There is no index. The table of contents begins on p.ix.)
