Stephen, 1876, Digest of the Law of Evidence, 2ed. Eng.
|
|
A digest of the law of evidence: 2ed, by James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-94), xlii+226p, London, Macmillan & Co., 1876. (A table of contents starts on p. xxxvii; an index on p. 185. This “Second Edition” has a curious history. It is based upon an English Code of Evidence (which Stephen considers the “First Edition”), that was prepared for the English parliament in 1872-73 by Sir Stephen at the request of Lord Coleridge, then the Attorney-General, but never passed. That English Code of Evidence was, in its turn, based upon the highly successful Indian Evidence Act, 1872, authored by Stephen, which is also offered on this site. The full story is told in the introduction to the present work, pp. iii-v.)
