A digest of the law of evidence: 2ed, by James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-94), xlii+226p, London, Macmillan & Co., 1876. (A table of contents starts on
p. xxxvii; an index on p. 185. This “Second Edition” has a curious history. It is based upon an English Code of Evidence (which Stephen considers the
“First Edition”), that was prepared for the English parliament in 1872-73 by Sir Stephen at the request of Lord Coleridge, then the Attorney-General,
but never passed. That English Code of Evidence was, in its turn, based upon the highly successful Indian Evidence Act, 1872, authored by Stephen,
