Secretary of State. List of academies in the Commonwealth, 1827
|
|
H.R. No. 16 On January 23, 1827, the Secretary of State responded to an order and sent a list of all academies incorporated in Massachusetts and Maine to date. The first list [2 1/2 p.] was arranged by date of incorporation and included the name and place of the school. 38 schools were in Massachusetts and 25 were in Maine. The second list was also arranged by date of incorporation, but showed that while the oldest school had been authorized to hold a lottery to raise funds, all the rest were given land [3 1/2 p.] Up to 1792, academies in Maine received an entire township, but from 1797 on, they received half a township or six square miles. A third list showed those schools which did not receive any land, including three female academies. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
