1861, Communication of the justices of the S.J. Court
Fortieth Legislature. Senate. No. 14. Communication of the Justices of the S.J. Court, January 21, 1861. The Legislature had inquired if it
should redistrict the Senators in 1861. Ordinarily, it was done every ten years, beginning in 1821, but a change in the time of the Legislature met drove
the last redistricting to 1852. Should the Legislature wait until 1862? The Court examined the history of legislative sessions and decided the 1852
date was a practical anomaly and the Legislature should redistrict in 1861, so as not to perpetuate the error. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of
title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
