5, 1866. Mr. Veazie reminded the legislators that the dam had first been authorized in 1828. When the company failed in the mid-1830s, Veazie bought
it and has owned the property for the last thirty years. Someone had claimed the company name and wanted to build a dam below the present one. That
would flood his property and property in Orono--he had the surveys and figures to prove it. He was willing to be bought out or have a commission come in
and generate a reasonable figure. Better yet, a commission could manage all the waterpower on the Penobscot for the benefit of all the communities on
