House. Select Comm. on Investigation of the Neponset Bridge Corporations. Report, 1842

House No. 38 A Select Committee, in response to several petitions, submitted its report on the Neponset Bridge Corporation. The proprietors of the
bridge first received their charter in 1802 for a bridge and a 3 1/2 mile turnpike between Dorchester and Quincy. They were allowed to toll for 70
years and then the bridge reverted to the state. There were requirements for the width and height of the bridge. When a toll taker could not be
present, the gates were supposed to be open. Hearings revealed that many requirements had not been met and the gates were closed when they should have
been open. During the years, the proprietors had made over $150,000 in dividends. The Committee did not recommend abrogating the charter, but it did
reduce the tolls to pennies. An Act in addition to an act relative to the Neponset Bridge Corporation, 1842. After October 28, 1843, the tolls were

The select committee, to whom was referred an order of the 14th January last, and to whom subsequently was referred a large number of petitions from twelve towns in Norfolk and Plymouth counties, bearing over 1000 signatures, and praying for an investigation into the affairs of the Neponset Bridge Corporation, have carefully considered the subject by examination into certain books and papers of said corporation, and by repeated hearings of the petitioners, as well as for the defence, and ask leave to present the following report ...
