Joint Comm. to Examine the Returns of Votes. Report, 1842
|

House No. 2 On January 7, 1842, a thirteen member Joint Committee examined the returned votes for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Several
jurisdictions made errors on their forms, but the Committee was able to sort out most of them; the returns were only rejected from one town. The candidate
for Governor needed 55,532 votes to have a majority; John Davis had 55,974, so he won. The candidate for Lieutenant Governor needed the same number,
but no candidate achieved it. The Committee was directed to carefully investigate the returns of Lowell, which they did, and then felt able to add
Lowell's votes to George Hull's total. He then had 56,076, so he won the post. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
