Senate No. 66 On February 23, 1842, the Committee on Public Charitable Institutions, in response to an order, submitted its annual report. The
Committee visited the State Lunatic Hospital first, which was doing excellent work. The Director asked for a general appropriation of $2,000 and another
appropriation to remodel a barn and other outbuildings to support the expanding farm. The Committee considered that money well spent. The Hospital
also wanted to somehow own and control its water supply. The Eye and Ear Infirmary was a great benefit to the industrious poor from all over the
state. The Committee recommended its appropriation be renewed. The New England Institution for the Education of the Blind was also doing very well; it
had a national reputation. It was very careful with its money. Massachusetts had an excellent reputation for its care of the afflicted. An Act
concerning the State Lunatic Hospital, 1842. The Trustees of the Hospital were to be a corporation to own property, accept donations, make contracts,
invest funds, etc. Resolve concerning the State Lunatic Asylum, 1842. The institution should have a $2,000 general appropriation and an additional
$2,000 for a barn and outbuildings. [The use of "Hospital" and "Asylum" was not explained.] (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
