Senate No. 57 On February 18, 1842, the Committee on Banks and Banking, in response to a re-committal, issued a report. The Directors of the
Springfield Bank had asked for an increase to their capital stock so they could respond to a request for a branch bank in Cabotville. The entire area was
vigorously engaged in manufacturing and trade and while there were two banks in Springfield, the distances depositors had to travel to use them had
become an issue. No one was asking for a new bank, but an expansion of an existing one. The Committee did not think anyone needed to fear that the
expanded bank would be too powerful, so they reported their earlier bill again [not included] and urged its passage. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of
