enate No. 52 On February 16, 1842, the Joint Committee on Towns, responding to a petition, reported a bill: An Act to incorporate the town of
Somerville, 1842. Somerville's outlines were defined in terms of the City of Charlestown, Cambridge, Medford, etc. The residents of the new town had to
pay off any taxes owed to adjacent jurisdictions and receive a proportion of any corporate property owned by adjacent jurisdictions. There were
provisions for the support of paupers and for tax values. A Justice of the Peace for Middlesex County was to call a meeting to elect town officers and

The Joint Committee on Towns, to whom was committed the petition of Guy G. Hawkins and others, inhabitants of Charlestown, praying to be incorporated into a new town, by the name of Somerville, respectfully report the accompanying bill.
