Senate. Comm. on Railways and Canals. Report on prices on the Western Rail-road, 1842

Senate No. 31 On February 5, 1842, the Committee on Railways and Canals, in response to an order, submitted a copy of the freight charges on the
Western Rail Road linked with the Boston & Worcester Rail Road. It is interesting to see the names of quantities, such as quintals. There were three
classes of freight, each defined, and for each class there was a triangular chart of town to town rates. Apparently a decimal point was not used in the
charges. As an example, first class freight all the way from Boston to Albany was $10/Ton, but the number in the chart is 1000. Then there was a
sheet of charges for specific items: flour, furniture, acid, wool, cigars, livestock, etc. Emigrant parties of 20 were charged $3 each; parties of 100
were charged $2 each. There were two pages of textual rules for shipping, signed by George Whistler, Engineer. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of
