House. Comm. on Finance. Report on payment of State debt, 1841
House No. 63 The Committee on Finance considered the state's financial situation. Income had diminished over the past four years, but expenses had
not. The Committee listed some potential savings, but warned of unexpected expenses such as the $1,000/day it cost if the Legislature stayed extra
time. $70,000 was needed in the Treasury by next January, so either pass a bill to cut the size of the militia, require counties to pay more of welfare
costs, re-arrange the costs of the probate system, and borrow $70,000 OR impose a state wide tax. A difficult choice. (Digitized from a microfilm
copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
