House No. 52 Mr. Dwight proposed: An Act concerning fraudulent debtors, 1841. Any creditor for a debt over $20 could allege fraud by the debtor,
swear to it before a Justice of the Peace, and post security. The debtor would be arrested and brought to court, and either bailed or confined.
There could be a jury trial. If it found for the plaintiff, the debtor had to pay court costs, the debt, and the cost of his incarceration. If the jury
found for the defendant, he had to pay his debt, but not costs, and would go free. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
