House. Comm. on Matters of Probate and Chancery. Report on return revolutionary war service books on loan, 1841
House No. 32 On February 12, 1841, the Committee on Probate and Chancery, in response to an order, reported on the requested return of
Revolutionary War militia rolls. In the 1830s, the rolls were loaned to the War Dept. so it could verify service records of applicants for pensions. After three
years, the Commonwealth Secretary asked for them back, but the Pension Office claimed it would make the bureaucratic process of pension application
extremely difficult, so the Secretary withdrew his request. The Committee had recently sent another request, but two long letters from the Pension
Office argued that the possibility of fraud was too great if an applicant could look at the rolls in his home state, etc. etc., so the Committee decided
it was not a fight it could win. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
