Joint Comm. on School Funding. Report, 1841
House No. 12 On January 15, 1841, the Secretary and the Treasurer of the Commonwealth notified the Legislature that reporting dates for the school
census made it impossible to correctly distribute the school fund. A Joint Committee decided to fix the entire situation with a bill: An Act
concerning the income of the Massachusetts School Fund, 1841. Each school district would take a census of its children between four and sixteen on May 1 of
each year. The form to fill out was in the act--numbers of children and the tax per child raised by the district that year. The minimum allowable
was $1.25. The form, and the annual report of the district, would be sent to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. The annual income of the
Massachusetts School Fund would be calculated on July 1 and the payout sent on July 10 to the school districts that complied with the rules. For 1841, the
payout would not be made in January, but July, and it would remain that way thereafter. Any inconsistent statutes on the topic were repealed. (Digitized
