House. Comm. on the Judiciary. Report on suffrage in areas that are not assessed taxes, 1841
|
|
House No. 11 The Committee on the Judiciary considered whether any legislation was necessary to protect suffrage and made a report. Four towns had not paid taxes for over two years--were the voters then disenfranchised? The Constitution specifically said that if a person were exempt from taxation, he could still vote. If no state or county tax was assessed in an area, those residents were still eligible to vote, so no further legislation was necessary. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
