SEE ALSO 53539 Senate No. 40 On February 27, 1841, the Joint Committee on Railways and Canals reported on a controversy over the Charlestown
Branch Railroad. Those in favor said it would be a big help in the procurement and delivery of ice, help business in Waltham, and would be a direct line
to the Charlestown wharves. Those opposed said it would ruin their town. After study and testimony, the Committee felt it was sufficient to go just
to Fresh and Spy Ponds. An Act authorizing the Charlestown Branch Rail-road Company to extend their road, 1841. The tracks were to be on a defined
route to Spy Pond. Construction had to be completed by January 1844 or the act was void. In certain places, the rail-road was to go under bridges and
precautions had to be taken with on-grade crossings. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
