Joint Standing Comm. on Prisons. Act for establishing a House of Correction for Hampshire, Hampden, Franklin, and Berkshire Counties, 1841

Senate No. 21 On February 8, 1841, the Joint Standing Committee on prisons reported a bill: An Act for establishing a House of Correction for the
counties of Hamsphire [sic], Hampden, Franklin, and Berkshire, 1841. The counties would unite to provide a fit and convenient House of Correction.
The establishment, its employees and other officers were subject to Revised Statues Chapter 143. Each county would select an overseer. The overseers,
in turn, would select a master. The overseers would select the location for the building, buy the land, contract for construction, and make the
rules for its operation Each county would contribute based on its last valuation, raising the money by taxes or otherwise. Once the facility was
completed, it would receive those prisoners from each county who would have been sent to a House of Correction had there been one. At least three counties
had to vote to accept this Act before plans could go forward. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
