Senate No. 2 A Special Committee to Abolish Imprisonment for Debt was constituted on January 11, 1841. On January 15, 1841, the Committee
reported: An Act in relation to imprisonment for debt, 1841. A debtor could be arrested if the debt was over $20, but the debtor could take the Poor Debtor
Oath to be released. He could only be arrested again if there were suspicion of fraud with his assets. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title

Ordered, that a special committee, with such as the Senate may join, be appointed to consider the expediency of providing for the effectual abolishment of imprisonment for debt, and to further consider the expediency of amending the laws the more effectually to punish fraud in cases of insolvent debtors.
