Joint Special Comm. on Rail-roads. Report, 1840

House No. 62 On February 4, 1840, the Joint Special Committee on Railroads was directed to determine six things in connection with the Western
Railroad: Cost of printing various documents for the railroad, if any money was paid to lobbyists for legislative appropriations, if extortionate prices
had to be paid for timber for ties, etc., were any depots built on land bought from company directors, had anyone been paid a salary for no work, and
who had been paid by the company. On March 17, 1840, the Committee issued a report. There was a history of the large loans to various railroad
projects and how things were going with those. The loan to the Western Railroad was in a class by itself, hence the questions. The Committee thought the
railroad had generally been run well so far, but it did direct that certain salaried personnel not be on the board of directors. The railroad sent
its response on February 18, 1840, starting on p. 17. It provided a long chart of printing costs. Four people did some lobbying a few years ago. The
board had planned carefully for the purchase of timber and bought most of it from afar. No directors were paid for land. An explanation was provided
for the work patterns of various engineers. There was a big chart of all the salaried personnel and their rates. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
