Joint Standing Comm. on Agriculture. Report on the Doolittle petition, 1840

House No. 58 On March 16, 1840, the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture submitted a report in response to the Doolittle petition: Standard
weights and measures should cross state lines. Bushels of grain were a particular difficulty. There was already a law calling for grain to be sold by
weight, but it was rarely enforced; there were directions for how to manage large sales. An Act relating to the sale of Indian meal and cracked corn,
1840. If the meal was sold by the bushel, the bushel had to weigh 50 pounds. There was a fine for failure to do so. (Digitized from a microfilm copy

The Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, to whom was referred the petition of Lucius Doolittle and others, requesting an alteration of the laws regulating the sale of grain and meal, have had that subject under consideration, and ask leave to report.
