House. Comm. on Education. Minority report on abolition of the Board of Education and normal schools, 1840
SEE ALSO 53388 House No. 53 Minority report of the Committee on Education submitted on March 11, 1840. The group was not given a copy of the
majority report, but had seen it and wanted to comment. Th group could not think of a single time when the Board of Education had tried to interfere
with a local district--they thought the majority was looking for monsters under the bed. The Board had worked collegially with the many teachers'
organizations around the state. The minority could not agree that the Board was trying to change the system of public education to mimic that of Prussia or
France. The annoying statistical forms were around before the Board was created and it has worked with teachers and others to gather more relevant
data. Re Normal Schools: a large private gift was combined with some state money to set up schools designed to qualify teachers for the common
schools. Three communities enthusiastically offered buildings and raised more money so the institutions would be in their towns. Two schools were up and
running and one more would be available soon. It would be a sin and a shame to stop now. The Minority asked the Legislature to consider both sides of
the issue. The statistical form was included as an appendix, as were two letters describing the instruction in the Normal Schools. (Digitized from
a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
