House. Comm. on Education. Report on abolition of the Board of Education and normal schools, 1840

House No. 49 On March 3, 1840, in line with the urgent need to cut costs, the Committee on Education was directed to consider the abolition of the
Board of Education and the Normal Schools. On March 7, 1840, the Committee tendered its report. The Committee had concluded that the Board of
Education was beginning to intrude on local control, was not especially helpful in disseminating information, and the statistical forms it sent out were
annoying. The Board also thought that students from the academies and high schools were sufficiently educated to be teachers without additional training
in Normal Schools. Anyone who thoroughly understood a subject matter could teach it. The state could buy out any remaining Normal School contracts.
An Act to abolish the Board of Education, 1840. The Board of Education and its secretary were abolished and the acts to fund the board were
repealed. The requirement for an annual report by the local schools was repealed. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
