Joint Special Comm. on Intermarriage. Report, 1840

House No. 46 On March 6, 1840, a Joint Special Committee considered petitions to remove rules against intermarriage of whites and non-whites and
submitted a report: The Committee believed the prohibition could not stand the test of principle or utility and should be repealed. They ran through
several arguments justifying the prohibition and demolished them all, noting that the law was the last relic of the old slave code. The law should
simply "ratify the contract which affections have made." An Act relating to marriage between individuals of certain races, 1840. The enumerated
sections of Chapter 76 of the Revised Statutes were repealed. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State
