House No. 44 On March 6, 1840, a Joint Special Committee reported on several petitions on the abolition of slavery in the United States and whether
to admit Florida as a slave state and presented: Resolves relating to slavery and the slave trade and the admission of new states into the Union,
1840. Congress should immediately suppress slavery in the District of Columbia and end the domestic slave trade. No state should be admitted to the
Union which sanctioned slavery within its borders. Massachusetts' Congressional delegation should be so instructed and all other states informed of the
