Joint Special Comm. on Use of Meeting House in Marshpee District. Report, 1840
|

House No. 43 A Joint Special Committee heard a petition of members of the Marshpee community asking to be able to use the meeting house for
religious services, but the established minister objected. The Committee gave a history of the community, noting that the established minister was not at
all popular. The meeting house was centrally located and large enough for an alternate congregation of 60-70 people with a popular minister. Harvard
divided its monetary support between the ministers. An Act concerning the District of Marshpee, 1840. The District of Marshpee was invested as a
religious society with the same rights, duties, and access to the meeting house as any other such society. However, the District could not assess

The joint special committee, to whom was referred the petition of Eben. Attaquin and forty-eight others, Indian Proprietors of the District of Marshpee, praying, that the legislature would grant them the use of the meeting house in said district, that whoever they may elect, their missionary may preach in it any sabbath.
