House No. 35 In February 1840, a special committee considered whether the state should furnish lifeboats. There followed a history of lifeboats.
It was possible to build one for about $400. Resolve for furnishing lifeboats, 1840. Give the Massachusetts Human Society $3,000 to build lifeboats

Ordered, that, Messrs. Atkins, of Provincetown, Willet, of Boston, Basset, of Barnstable, Pulsifer, of Salem, Gifford, of Westport, be a committee, to consider and report, whether any, and if any, what measures should be taken by the commonwealth, to furnish life boats for certain dangerous parts of our coast, more effectually to secure the lives of persons who may be wrecked thereon.
