House No. 31 In February, a joint special committee reported on a federal bill ending the duty on imported salt and removing the bounty on pickled
fish and fishing vessels. The Legislature opposed the bill and sent Resolves to that effect: Resolves concerning the duty on salt and the bounty to
fishing vessels, 1840. Resolved: the repeal of the duty and bounty would negatively affect the American people. Resolved: passage would destroy the
salt and cod businesses in Massachusetts. Resolved: the Governor would please notify other states and Congress about the Resolves. (Digitized from a
