Joint Special Comm. on Election Laws. Act to protect the right of suffrage, 1840
Senate No. 47 In January 1840, a seven man committee considered the election laws and submitted a report and a bill. The committee did not think
the law really needed to be changed, but did submit An Act to protect the right of suffrage, 1840. Assessors could not willfully fail to assess the
poll tax on an eligible voter, town officials could not look at votes before they were cast, every voter should deposit his own vote, no one should try
to influence a voter. There were fines for failure to follow the rules. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   Ordered, that so much of the governor's address as relates to the election laws, and the right of suffrage, be referred to Messrs Davis and Pratt, with such as the House may join.
