Senate. Comm. on Rail-roads and Canals. Replies from railroads on land taxes, 1840
|
|
Senate No. 39 On March 4, 1840, the Committee on Rail-roads and Canals asked that the responses of certain railroads be printed. The companies had been asked how much land they owned, how it was acquired, and whether any tax had been paid on the properties. Most companies owned their land in fee simple, and had paid tax on depot and yard grounds, but had refused to pay for track ground [it was seldom levied]. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
