Senate. Comm. on Rail-roads and Canals. Replies from railroads on land taxes, 1840
Senate No. 39 On March 4, 1840, the Committee on Rail-roads and Canals asked that the responses of certain railroads be printed. The companies had
been asked how much land they owned, how it was acquired, and whether any tax had been paid on the properties. Most companies owned their land in fee
simple, and had paid tax on depot and yard grounds, but had refused to pay for track ground [it was seldom levied]. (Digitized from a microfilm copy
of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   Ordered, that the Committee on Rail-roads and Canals be instructed to cause to be printed the several reports of the Boston and Lowell, the Boston and Worcester, and the Boston and Providence Rail-road Corporations, in relation to lands held by said corporations, and whether the same are taxed.
