Joint Special Comm. on Exclustion of New Jersey Representatives. Report on N.J. resolves, 1840

Senate No. 33 Resolves relating to the exclusion of New Jersey Congressional representatives provided by the Governor of New Jersey. On January 24,
1840, five duly elected representatives from New Jersey were denied seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. State law governed elections, not
U.S. law, so this was "a gross outrage upon the rights and feelings of the people of New Jersey." A Joint Special Committee considered the situation
and submitted a report: The five denied representatives were properly elected, but only one was seated. This was not right. The Committee submitted:
Resolves relating to the exclusion of the New Jersey representatives. The rights of a sister state had been violated, so the Legislature of
Massachusetts solemnly protested the derogation of the sovereignty of a state. Next was the minority report: The House of Representatives had not made a
final decision, so it was not helpful to protest yet. The minority wanted to see evidence for why the candidates were denied their seats. The minority
did not agree with refusing to accept Acts of Congress until the dispute was settled. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the
