Joint Select Comm. on Steamboats. Report on an act of Congress, 1840

Senate No. 16 On January 20, 1840, a Joint Select Committee met to consider asking the federal government to regulate steamboats. In February 1840, the Committee submitted a report. The federal law of 1838 was not good enough. Boats currently are made of flammable material and carry flammable cargo. Resolves concerning steam boats, 1840. No freight should be carried on passenger boats and the company had to provide life saving equipment. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
