Joint Special Comm. on Small Pox. Report concerning small pox, 1840
|
|
Senate No. 5 Report concerning small pox. On January 3, 1840, a committee was formed to consider reinstating some of the small pox laws. There was a list of the laws imposed and repealed and data from epidemics. The practice of isolating people in a hospital on an island was discussed. Regular vaccination began in 1800 and made a big difference in the number of cases. There was a history of inoculation in Boston; the committee tried to emphasize that people do not die from the vaccination itself. There was a long discussion about any need for re-vaccination. An Act concerning small pox, 1840. An act passed in 1838 re sections 43 and 44 of the 21st chapter of the Revised Statutes was repealed. Households and doctors were again required to notify the health department of smallpox cases. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
