House. Comm. on Native-Born Suffrage. Report and resolves, 1836
On February 29, 1836, a three man committee was asked to explore asking the state's Congressional delegation to pursue limiting suffrage to native
born citizens. On March 23, 1836, the committee reported that was not a good idea. On the same day, a minority report was filed that was very much in
favor of the idea of limiting suffrage. The influx of foreigners was too great, so the minority presented a Resolve: because of the danger to our
institutions, ask the Congressional delegation of the Commonwealth to work toward limiting suffrage to native-born citizens. The Governor was asked to
distribute the resolve to other states. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
Title:   Ordered, that Mr. Howe, of Boston, Harrington, of Worcester, Moseley, of Newburyport, be a committee to take into consideration the expediency of instructing our senators, and requesting our representatives in Congress, to endeavor, so far, to procure an alteration in the laws in relation to naturalization, that no person, who is not a native born citizen of the United States, shall be allowed the right of suffrage.
