House No. 55 Report relative to the organization of the militia. On March 24, 1836, the Joint Standing Committee on the Militia reported in
response to an order of January 22, 1836. The militia organization needed work. There were plenty of laws, but not much enthusiasm for service. There
followed several pages with a history of the militia, why militias were important, and why standing armies were bad. An Act concerning the militia,
1836. Every able bodied white citizen ages 18-45 was to be enrolled in the militia, with some exceptions. Towns were to pay the soldiers the amount of
their poll tax. There were sections about the organization and officers of the militia, with more directions about the use of equipment. The Adjutant
General was to make an annual report based on information from the ranks, who were to be fined if they did not provide the data. (Digitized from a
