House No. 49 Report by the Committee on Education relative to the education of children employed in manufacturing establishments, 1836. On March 17, 1836, the Committee submitted a report called for on February 29, 1836. Labor and where it was done were changing a lot and rapidly. New England had to uphold its reputation as an area that educated its citizens. Presently over 200,000 women and more children worked in mills because they were cheaper to employ than men. Poor families were dependent on the earnings of their children. However, the young workers had no time to go to school. An Act to provide for the better instruction of youth employed in manufacturing establishments, 1836. No one under the age of fourteen could work in the mills. There were fines for non-compliance.
