House. Comm. on Education. Report on education of children employed in manufacturing establishments, 1836

had to uphold its reputation as an area that educated its citizens. Presently over 200,000 women and more children worked in mills because they were
cheaper to employ than men. Poor families were dependent on the earnings of their children. However, the young workers had no time to go to school.
An Act to provide for the better instruction of youth employed in manufacturing establishments, 1836. No one under the age of fourteen could work in
the mills. There were fines for non-compliance. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
