House. Comm. on the Judiciary. Act to regulate assignment of insolvent debtors' property, 1836
SEE ALSO 52770, 52774 House No. 19 The Committee on the Judiciary reported a bill: An Act to regulate the assignment and distribution of the
property of the insolvent debtor, 1836. A debtor may assign his property, but was often better served by turning the process over to the court.
Creditors were defined; it was to their benefit to make a timely claim. Assignment would be made in proportion to the size of the debt; provision was made
for distant creditors. The Supreme Judicial Court could manage such proceedings. The debtor's rights were abrogated if he engaged in fraud by
trying to hide or prematurely assign assets. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
