House No. 11 On January 16, 1836, three men were named as a committee to consider regulations for piloting vessels from the sea to Edgartown and
Nantucket. The committee reported: An Act in addition to an act for establishing the compensation for piloting vessels through the Vineyard Sound, over
Nantucket Shoals in certain cases, 1836. The Governor was to appoint three local people to be wardens for pilots working in the Vineyard Sound. The
wardens would set the rules and issue warrants to pilots. Each pilot had to give a $100 bond. Without a warrant, a person could not be paid to
pilot. Pilots could be sued for damages to ships. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
