Senate No. 77 On March 30, 1836, the Committee on Railways and Canals submitted a long statement of facts about two potential railroad routes,
trying to sort out a route for the Eastern Railroad. Six towns and their businesses were described in relation to a railroad connection. Most towns were
supportive of a railroad. Most bridge companies were not because they relied on wagon and foot traffic for income. The physical traits of the routes
were compared--each needed a ferry on the Boston end, there were tunnels on one, but not the other, curves, slopes, soil types, etc. Some rivers
would be obstructed, some farms would be cut apart, and on and on. Generally, the "eastern route" was most useful for freight and the "western route"
