Joint Comm. on Railways and Canals. Act to establish the Eastern Rail-road Company, 1836

Senate No. 54 On March 12, 1836, the Joint Committee on Railways and Canals reported a bill: An Act to establish the Eastern Railroad Company,
1836. Three men and their associates were incorporated as above, abiding by Chapters 39 and 44 of the Revised Statutes, to build a railroad between
Boston and the New Hampshire state line on a defined route of several pages. The Company could have from 13,000 to 20,000 shares and could hold real
estate and equipment. It had to maintain twenty-four hour draw bridges on four rivers and o maintain the integrity of any aqueducts in its path. The
Salem Turnpike and the Chelsea Bridge Corporation could each buy into the enterprise. The corporation had to gather its operating money by January 1,
1837 and file location drawings and begin building by September 1, 1838 or else this law was null and void. The Legislature could regulate tolls after
five years. Other railroads could connect to this one by paying suitable fees. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the

The Joint Committee on Railways and Canals, to whom were referred the petition of George Peabody and others, and of Thomas H. Perkins and others, for an Eastern Rail-road, and sundry memorials and remonstrances for and against said petitions, have given the subject a protracted investigation, and ask leave, on the petition of George Peabody and others, to report the accompanying bill.
