SEE ALSO 52869 Senate No. 52 On March 8, 1836, the Joint Committee on prisons reported a bill: An Act in addition to an act providing for the government and regulation of the State Prison, 1836. The Governor had the authority to purchase a granite quarry for the use of the prison, paying up to $12,000. The Governor could sell land adjoining the prison to the Charlestown Branch Railroad Corporation and arrange to build a railroad. The Warden could extend the wharf for the prison, spending up to $3,000. The warden could pay the turnkeys and watchmen $50 in addition to their salary and could provide fuel for all who resided within the prison walls.
