Joint Comm. on Railways and Canals. Act in addition to the 39th Chapter of the Revised Statutes … 1836
Senate No. 41 [this number was also used on 52849] On March 1, 1836, the Joint Committee on Railways and Canals submitted a bill in response to an
order: An Act in addition to the thirty-ninth chapter of the Revised Statutes, of turnpike, railroad, and canal corporations, 1836. The Legislature
could alter the charters of corporations, but not so as to cause profits to drop below 10% per annum. The Legislature could not repeal a charter
unless there had been a violation of same. The required categories of a corporation's annual report were listed. If a railroad's trains were unable to
run for some reason, an alternative mode of carriage should be offered, e.g. stagecoach. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
the Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   Ordered, that the Committee on Railways and Canals, be instructed to enquire, whether any, and if any, what alterations are necessary in the general laws concerning rail-road corporations.
