Senate. Comm. on Support of Idiots and Insane Persons. Act to proved for confinement of idiots and insane persons, 1836
Senate No. 38 On February 27, 1836, a three man committee submitted a bill: An Act to provide for the confinement of idiots and insane persons,
1836. Each House of Correction was to maintain a confinement space for idiots and the insane, not furiously mad. A Justice of the Peace was to respond
to written requests to confine such persons, but with safe and comfortable support. An unstated amount per week would be provided for their support
[paid by the local jurisdiction?]. Such persons could be discharged if it would be for their benefit or suitable persons came forward to care for
them. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   Ordered, that Messrs. Kimball, Greenwood, and Chapin, be a committee, to enquire into the expediency of making provision, by law, for the support or confinement of idiots and insane persons, not furiously mad.
