SEE ALSO 52841 Senate No. 37 Report relative to United States public lands. On February 24, 1836, the Committee that offered the Resolve on the
sale of the United States public lands made available the Congressional bill and its report. Report in the Senate of the United States, January 27,
1836. The sale of public lands so far had paid off the public debt. There was a consensus that customs duties were sufficient for the general expenses
of government. The public lands account held about $24,000,000 in proceeds that had not yet been appropriated. There were several suggestions about
how to spend the money; the report discussed them all. The Committee favored distributing the money to the states based on population and posted a
table showing amounts for each--Massachusetts might receive $1,052,953. Because the areas had been purchased by the government, Florida and the Louisiana
Purchase were treated differently, but the existing states in those areas still received money and land grants. A Bill to appropriate for a limited
time the proceeds of the sales of the public lands of the United States and for granting land to certain states. After December 31, 1832, 10% of
public land sales within certain states would return to those states for education or internal improvements. The residue of the net proceeds of public
land sales would be divided among twenty-four states for their Legislatures to use for education, internal improvements, colonization of people of
color, or to pay off debts for internal improvements. The money received for public land sales for 1833-1835 would be paid out on May 1, 1836, and the
money for 1836-1837 would be paid in January and June of each year. The law would be in force until 1837. In addition, certain states would receive
substantial land grants from land within their boundaries with directions about selection and sale. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally
