House. Comm. on Rainsford Island. Act to defray expense of protecting Rainsford Island, 1835
|
|
House No. 35 A three man committee inspected Rainsford Island, and its smallpox hospital. Resolve: for defraying the expense of protecting Rainsford Island from the ravages of the sea, 1835. $4500 appropriated to the Governor to hire an agent to supervise repairs. Report: The island was seven miles from shore and 11 A. in extent. There were 20+ buildings on the property, a garden, and a cemetery. Some of the damage was at the agricultural area and one house was dangerously close to the edge. The sea wall had completely failed. Given that the island had three good wells, good buildings, excellent people, and served a real purpose, it was appropriate to try to save it. Appendix A was a detailed description of the buildings on the island. Appendix B was a long statement of the financials of the hospital. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
