House. Comm. on Alterations to the Law on County Commissioners. Act on election of county commissioners, 1835
|

House No. 30 A fourteen man committee considered petitions to change the County Commissioner position to an elected office. On February 16, 1835,
the Committee reported a bill: An Act to provide for the election of County Commissioners and for other purposes, 1835. The counties of Suffolk and
Nantucket were excepted. In all the other counties, the Judge of Probate, Register of Probate, and the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas were made a
Board of Examiners for the election of County Commissioners and to supervise the Commissioners' accounts. Voters in the various jurisdictions in each
county were to vote during March for three Commissioners and two alternates; the votes were sent to that county's Board of Examiners. There were the
usual directions for resolving a lack of a majority. The Commissioners were responsible for the layout and maintenance of roads and were to maintain
